Digger was born and raised in Boonville along with his three sisters: Judy Felten, Mary Jenry (deceased) and Peggy Arnold. His father, Dick, managed B & J Bowling Alley and his mother, Eleanor, was a waitress for the Stein House. Digger was a member of the First Christian Church and was employed at the bowling alley and as a Boonville city employee working for both the street and sanitation departments. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1975 with a bachelor’s degree and was commissioned an Ensign in the U.S. Navy. He spent the next 30 years serving this country. He had numerous sea and shore assignments that took him all over the world. Retiring from the Navy in 2005 with the rank of Captain, Digger went to work for the defense contractor, Science Application International Corporation (SAIC) as a training consultant supporting deploying Navy and Marine Corps forces. He retired from that position in 2015. He and his wife, Jeannette, (a retired special education teacher) reside in Coronado, CA.
In 2017, Jeannette and Digger partnered with the Education Foundation to create the Boonville Pirate Leadership Award. This award is provided annually to the graduating senior who has demonstrated the highest levels of leadership throughout their high school career.
